Ce colloque a pour ambition d’explorer les nombreux défis épistémologiques et méthodologiques de l’ethnographie des animaux et des relations anthropozoologiques : à quelles conditions une « ethnographie multi-espèces » est-elle réalisable ? Et quelles approches méthodologiques peuvent-elles permettre une ethnographie des animaux ? Il a également pour objectif d’analyser les enjeux éthiques de l’ethnographie des animaux et de leurs relations avec les humain·e·s.

This conference aims to explore the many epistemological and methodological challenges of anthropozoological relationships ethnography: Under what conditions is a “multi-species ethnography” feasible? And what methodological approaches can allow an ethnography of animals? It also aims to analyse the ethical issues of the animals in ethnography. The academic world is marked by ideological tensions which echo the growing politicization of the animal condition within society. In such circumstances, how are ethnographers encouraged to position themselves? How does the adoption of an ethical commitment, or refusal thereof, by researchers influence their relationship to the field and to respondents, both human and non-human?

With the increase in survival from childhood cancer, research has increasingly focused on the educational
and professional achievements of childhood cancer survivors. Yet, if large-scale studies provide an
acute description of the current situation of childhood cancer survivors, little is known about their
trajectories and the social processes shaping these trajectories.
Using a qualitative methodology, drawing from a life course perspective, this study sought to describe
the role of childhood cancer and its side effects in educational trajectories, as perceived by the participants.
We investigated related processes of social adjustment to cancer, that is to say, choices or decisions
that survivors related to the illness in the making of their career plans. Eighty long-term French childhood
cancer survivors participating in the Euro2K longitudinal study were interviewed through in-depth,
face-to-face interviews undertaken in 2011e2012.
There were various types of impact described by respondents of the diagnosis of cancer on their
trajectories. These varied according to gender. In women, childhood cancer tended to result in poor
educational achievement, or in steering the individual towards a health care or child care occupation.
This was justified by a desire to return the support that had been offered to them as patients. In men,
however, childhood cancer led to a shift in career plans, because of physical sequelae, or because of
concerns about their future health. Paradoxically, this limitation had a positive impact in their occupational
achievement, as most of these men disregarded blue-collar jobs and chose more qualified whitecollar
occupations. Overall, findings suggest that childhood cancer influenced educational trajectories
and, thus, socioeconomic status in adulthood, through mechanisms embedded in gender norms. These
mechanisms could explain gender inequalities in educational achievement after childhood cancer reported
in large-scale cohort studies.

In France, breast cancer screening programme, free of charge for women aged 50-74 years old, coexists with an opportunistic screening and leads to reduction in attendance in the programme. Here, we reported participation in organized and/or opportunistic screening in thirteen French departments. We analyzed screening data (organized and/or opportunistic) of 622,382 women aged 51-74 years old invited to perform an organized mammography screening session from 2010 to 2011 in the thirteen French departments. The type of mammography screening performed has been reported according to women age, their health insurance scheme, the rurality and the socioeconomic level of their area or residence. We also represented the tertiles of deprivation and participation in mammography screening for each department. A total of 390,831 (62.8%) women performed a mammography screening (organized and/or opportunistic) after the invitation. These women were mainly aged from 55-69 years old, insured by the general insurance scheme and lived in urban, semi-urban or affluent areas. The participation in mammography screening (organized and opportunistic) in France remains below the target rate of 70% expected by health authorities to reduce breast cancer mortality through screening.

DESCRIPTION L’étude VVSK/Survican visait à renseigner sur les mécanismes, méthodes ou stratégies d’ajustement social à l’événement cancer survenu dans l’enfance. Les objectifs étaient à deux niveaux distincts, mais étroitement liés. Il s’agissait : 1. De documenter les trajectoires de vie des adultes survivants d’un cancer pédiatrique, afin d’en tirer des enseignements pour améliorer la prévention des risques psychosociaux de long terme liés à l’expérience du cancer dans l’enfance ; 2. D’élaborer une méthode de rapprochement entre les données qualitatives issues de l’enquête sociologique SurviCan (conduite auprès de sujets de la cohorte Euro2K) et les données quantitatives issues de l’enquête épidémiologique Euro2K. Ce rapport de recherche porte sur les résultats intéressant les ajustements sociaux des anciens jeunes malades, tels qu’ils ont déterminé leur trajectoire de vie.
